Has anyone split the tailshaft housing off of a zf tranny? Or does anyone know a tranny guy that I can call to answer a question?

try calling a tranmission repair shop, depending on the question most will either help you over the phone or caution you from proceeding for whatever reason.  Holland transmission has helped me answer a question before on a trans issue I was having.  Not to mention Dirty addiction from gl4x4.com also works there.  Maybe PM him on that site with your question.
